Flying to Kruger National Park: Complete Flight Guide

Which airport to fly into for Kruger? Nelspruit, Hoedspruit, Skukuza or Phalaborwa compared. Flight times, airlines, and transfer options for a Kruger safari.

Flying to Kruger — The 4 Gateway Airports

Kruger National Park is one of Africa's great wildlife destinations. While many visitors drive up from Johannesburg (about 4–5 hours), flying is a far better option if you're time-constrained or based in Cape Town or Durban. There are four airports that serve as gateways to Kruger — each with different locations, airlines, and transfer implications.

Nelspruit — Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (MQP)

Nelspruit is the largest gateway airport for Kruger and the best-connected. It's served by Airlink and FlySafair from Johannesburg, and by Airlink from Cape Town. The airport is about 100 km from the Numbi Gate (southern Kruger) — roughly a 90-minute drive.

Nelspruit is also the gateway to the Blyde River Canyon, Panorama Route, and Mpumalanga's highlands. If you're combining a safari with Mpumalanga sightseeing, this is your airport.

Hoedspruit Airport (HDS)

Hoedspruit sits on the western boundary of Kruger and is surrounded by private game reserves including Timbavati, Kapama, Thornybush, and Klaserie. If you're staying at a private lodge west of Kruger, Hoedspruit is almost certainly the right airport.

Hoedspruit is served by Airlink from Johannesburg and Cape Town. The airport is small and intimate — essentially a bush airstrip with a terminal — which makes it a fantastic arrival experience for safari guests.

Skukuza Airport (SZK)

Skukuza is the most direct way to fly into Kruger — the airport is inside the park itself, adjacent to Skukuza Rest Camp. This makes it the fastest option for guests staying at Skukuza or nearby camps. The airport is small, served only by Airlink from Johannesburg.

One caveat: Skukuza's schedule is limited. Always verify current routes and availability as they can change seasonally.

Phalaborwa Airport (PHW)

Phalaborwa is the northern Kruger gateway, bordering the park at Phalaborwa Gate. It's served by Airlink from Johannesburg and is ideal for guests staying in northern Kruger camps like Letaba, Mopani, or Shingwedzi. Phalaborwa town has good accommodation and the gate into Kruger is just 2 km from the airport.
