The geography problem, stated honestly

Pietermaritzburg is the legislative capital of KwaZulu-Natal. It has provincial government, a large university presence and long-established schools. On paper that should support real air travel demand.

In practice it sits roughly 80 kilometres from King Shaka on the N3, and that is a comfortable drive rather than an expedition. King Shaka offers dramatically more daily departures, more carriers and more competitive fares. For a lot of Pietermaritzburg residents, the rational choice is to drive to Durban.

We would rather say that plainly than pretend otherwise. An airport guide that oversells its subject is not much use to anybody.

When PZB is genuinely the better choice

You are heading inland, not coastal. If your destination in KwaZulu-Natal is the Midlands, Howick, Hilton or Pietermaritzburg itself, flying into PZB deletes the N3 drive entirely, in both directions. That is up to two hours of your life back on a return trip.

The timing suits. If the PZB schedule happens to line up with your meeting and the King Shaka alternative means a 04:30 start to allow for the drive, the convenience is worth real money.

You are not paying for the flight yourself. Business travel where the fare differential matters less than the arrival time is exactly the market this airport serves.

The weather is doing something. The N3 between Durban and Pietermaritzburg carries enormous freight volumes and closes or crawls more often than people plan for. If you have a hard deadline, removing that road from the plan has value.

When to drive to King Shaka instead

Your destination is coastal or international. King Shaka handles international traffic; PZB does not. If you are connecting onwards, you will end up there anyway.

You want a choice of fare. More carriers means more competition, and on a thin route you are largely taking what you are given.

You are flying as a family. Fare differences multiply by the number of seats, and R500 a head across four people buys a lot of petrol.

The meaningful route is the link to Johannesburg, and it is served as a regional service rather than a high-frequency trunk route. Expect a smaller aircraft, fewer daily options and a schedule built around business travel rather than leisure.

Because the schedule is thin, book earlier than you would on a trunk route. On Johannesburg–Cape Town a last-minute seat is expensive; on a regional service it may simply not exist.

PZB is a small airport, and that is its other real advantage. Check-in, security and boarding are quick in a way OR Tambo will never be. Pietermaritzburg Airport is a convenience product. It is not competing on price and it never will, because it cannot generate the volume that drives fares down. What it sells is the removal of an 80-kilometre drive at each end of your trip.

Work out what those two hours are worth to you on this specific trip. Sometimes it is a lot. Often, honestly, it is less than the fare gap — and then you drive.
