What is launching
Until now, every scheduled flight from Johannesburg to Harare left from OR Tambo. From 15 November 2026 Airlink adds a second option: Lanseria International Airport, north-west of the city. Bookings are already open.
For anyone living in Fourways, Randburg, Roodepoort, Krugersdorp, Midrand or north-west Pretoria, Lanseria is usually a shorter drive than OR Tambo and a much smaller terminal to get through. That matters most in the December rush, when OR Tambo's international hall is at its busiest.

The route uses Airlink's Embraer E190, a 98-seat regional jet laid out two-and-two, so every seat is a window or an aisle. Airlink is a full-service airline: its fares on regional routes include a checked bag (20 kg on the Airlink fares we checked to Windhoek), plus an 8 kg cabin bag. Confirm the allowance on your ticket before you pack.

Choose Lanseria if you live on the north or west side of Johannesburg, want a short, calm airport, and the 07:00 departure suits you. Arrive at 08:40 and you have the whole day in Harare.
Choose OR Tambo if you need a specific day Airlink does not fly, want the lowest fare, or live in the east or south of Johannesburg. OR Tambo has more airlines on the route (FlySafair, Fastjet, SAA, Air Zimbabwe and Airlink) and several flights a day, so it will often have the cheapest seat. The Gautrain runs straight into the OR Tambo terminal from Sandton and Pretoria.
