How to get the best flight deals in South Africa

South African domestic fares fluctuate significantly depending on timing, airline, and demand. The difference between booking at the right moment and booking at the wrong one can be hundreds of rands on the same route. Here's what consistently works:

Book in the 4–8 week window

For domestic routes, this is the pricing sweet spot. Earlier than 8 weeks and you may be paying before the airline has released promotional inventory. Inside 4 weeks, cheap seats are typically gone and last-minute pricing takes over. The exception is December travel — book that as early as possible, often 10–12 weeks out.

Fly midweek

Tuesday and Wednesday departures are consistently cheaper than Monday, Friday, and Sunday on South African domestic routes. If you have flexibility, shifting a Friday departure to a Thursday or your Sunday return to a Tuesday can save R200–R500 per person.

Compare base fares vs total cost

A FlySafair headline fare of R699 with a R250 bag fee costs more than a Lift fare of R899 that includes 23kg of luggage. Always compare total cost — base fare plus any bags you need — before deciding which is cheapest. VistaVoyage route pages list all airlines on each route so you can compare apples to apples.

Watch for flash sales

FlySafair runs periodic "seat sales" with significantly reduced fares, often announced on short notice via email and social media. Lift does similar promotions. If you're flexible on dates, subscribing to their mailing lists and following their social channels gives you early access to these deals. VistaVoyage's route pages link directly to the booking partner so you can move quickly when a sale drops.
