Phalaborwa Airport Guide 2026: Kruger Gateway — Currently Suspended (PHW)

Phalaborwa Airport was once the closest fly-in point for central and northern Kruger — the Phalaborwa Gate sits less than 2km from the terminal. But Airlink suspended all scheduled services on 10 June 2020, and no airline has returned. This guide covers the current situation and the three alternative airports that actually work.

⚠ No scheduled flights at Phalaborwa Airport. Airlink suspended all commercial services to and from PHW on 10 June 2020. There are currently zero scheduled passenger flights at this airport. Charter and private flights may still use the runway — contact the airport directly for non-scheduled operations.

What Happened to Phalaborwa Airport?

Phalaborwa Airport was built and opened on 3 April 1992 by Airlink as a purpose-built gateway to northern Kruger. It served the camps that the southern airports couldn't reach efficiently — Letaba, Mopani, Olifants, Shingwedzi and Punda Maria. With the Phalaborwa Gate barely 2km from the terminal, it was the fastest possible entry point into the park.

When Airlink suspended services in June 2020 during the aviation downturn, the route was never restored. The airport has a single 1,373m asphalt runway and sits at 436m elevation. It continues to handle private charter flights and safari lodge transfers, but there is no scheduled passenger service and no announced return date.

The practical replacement: For most travellers who would have flown PHW, Hoedspruit (HDS) is the nearest working airport at about 1.5–2 hours' drive. For budget travellers, Nelspruit (MQP) has more airlines and cheaper fares but sits further south. Full comparison in our Which airport for Kruger? guide.

Charter and Lodge Transfers

PHW's runway remains operational for non-scheduled flights. If you're booked at a lodge that offers charter transfers (common in the private concessions bordering central Kruger), contact the lodge directly — some still arrange charter flights into PHW or nearby strips. Companies like Federal Air and Airlink's Lodge Link service operate point-to-point bush flights that may use PHW by arrangement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there flights to Phalaborwa Airport in 2026?

No. Airlink suspended all scheduled commercial services to and from Phalaborwa (PHW) on 10 June 2020 and no airline has returned. There are currently zero scheduled passenger flights at PHW.

What is the nearest airport to Phalaborwa with flights?

Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport (HDS), about 1.5 to 2 hours' drive west via the R40. Airlink operates daily flights from Johannesburg, Lanseria, Cape Town and Durban to HDS.

Why did flights to Phalaborwa stop?

Airlink suspended PHW during the 2020 aviation downturn and the route was never restored. The airport continues to handle charter and private flights but has no scheduled passenger service and no announced return date.

Which airport should I use for northern Kruger camps like Letaba and Mopani?

Hoedspruit (HDS) is the best working alternative for central Kruger camps including Letaba, Mopani and Olifants. For the far-northern camps (Shingwedzi, Punda Maria), Polokwane (PTG) with a drive south may be more practical.

Can I still charter a flight to Phalaborwa?

The runway remains operational for non-scheduled flights. Contact your lodge or a charter operator like Federal Air directly to arrange private flights into PHW or nearby bush strips.

How far is Phalaborwa Gate from Phalaborwa Airport?

Less than 2km. The airport was purpose-built as a direct Kruger gateway, which made the loss of scheduled flights particularly significant for northern Kruger access.
