Under the Public Holidays Act, a holiday falling on a Sunday moves to the following Monday; a Saturday holiday does not move. Government occasionally proclaims once-off holidays — we'll update this page if 2027 gets any.
The crown jewel: March 2027's double long weekend
This is the calendar quirk to plan your year around. Human Rights Day lands on Sunday 21 March, making Monday 22 March a public holiday. Four working days later, Good Friday (26 March) kicks off the four-day Easter weekend ending Family Day, Monday 29 March.
Take just three leave days — Tuesday 23 to Thursday 25 March — and you're off from Saturday 20 March to Monday 29 March: ten consecutive days for three days of leave. That's Mauritius territory. That's a proper Garden Route self-drive. That's Zanzibar.
Long weekend by long weekend: where to go, when to book
1–3 January (Fri–Sun) — recover, or extend the December coast trip

20–22 March (Sat–Mon) + 26–29 March (Fri–Mon) — the big one
Ten days for three leave days. Long-haul-lite options that fit perfectly: Mauritius (no visa, 4-hour flight), Zanzibar, or a full Garden Route loop flying into George. Book: Dec 2026–Jan 2027.
24–27 April (Sat–Tue, one leave day Monday 26th) — Freedom Day bridge

7–9 August (Sat–Mon) — Women's Day long weekend
A true Monday holiday, no leave required. Whale season is starting in Hermanus — fly Cape Town. Winter green-season specials make this the year's best-value long weekend for JNB–CPT. Book: May–June 2027.
24–26 September (Fri–Sun) — Heritage Day braai weekend
Friday holiday = zero leave days for three days away. Spring in the Drakensberg, or Durban's beaches warming up — JNB–DUR fares spike for this one every year because it needs no leave. Book: June–July 2027.
16–19 December (Thu–Sun, one leave day Friday 17th) — festive season launch
Reconciliation Day Thursday + one leave day = four days, and you beat the school-holiday fare cliff by days. The smartest December coastal flight of the year. Book: August–September 2027.
25–27 December (Sat–Mon) — Christmas with a Monday bonus
Day of Goodwill falls on Sunday, so Monday 27 December is a public holiday — softening the return-flight crush. Still: December fares are December fares. Book by September.

How many long weekends does SA get in 2027?

Why is Monday 22 March 2027 a holiday?
Human Rights Day (21 March) falls on a Sunday, and the Public Holidays Act moves Sunday holidays to the following Monday.
Do Saturday holidays move to Monday?
No — only Sunday holidays move. Workers' Day (Sat 1 May) and Christmas (Sat 25 Dec) stay put in 2027, but Goodwill (Sun 26 Dec) creates the Monday 27 December holiday.
When exactly should I book the March 2027 mega-break?
December 2026 to January 2027 for the best fares. Early Easter + double long weekend = the most compressed demand spike of 2027. Thursday/Friday outbound legs sell out first.
