The 2026 winter school holiday starts 27 June — that is less than four weeks away, and fares on the busiest SA routes are already moving. Here is every holiday period, the routes that spike hardest, and the exact booking windows you need to beat the price increases.

Book winter holiday flights now. The Term 2 break runs 27 June to 20 July 2026. At the time of writing you have roughly 4 weeks before departure weekend. JHB–CPT, JHB–DBN and JHB–GRJ fares climb sharply in the final three weeks before a school holiday. If you haven't booked, do it today.

2026 South African school holiday dates

These are the official Department of Basic Education dates for all public schools in South Africa. Private and independent school dates vary — always check with your specific school. From 2024, inland and coastal schools share the same term dates, which simplifies planning for families travelling between provinces.

Special school holiday — 15 June 2026: The Monday before Youth Day (16 June) has been declared a special school holiday by the Department of Basic Education. This creates a 4-day long weekend for families. Flights out of JHB and CPT on Thursday 12 June will be in high demand — if you want to use this weekend for a short trip, fares are already elevated.

Why school holiday flights cost more — and exactly when prices jump

South Africa has a large, concentrated domestic travel market. When 13 million learners break at the same time, demand for the 8–10 most popular domestic routes spikes simultaneously. There are only so many FlySafair, Lift and Airlink seats to go around, and the airlines price accordingly.

The surge follows a predictable pattern. Prices start rising roughly six to eight weeks before a school holiday departure date as families who planned ahead have already booked, leaving fewer seats. In the final three weeks before departure, fares on high-demand routes like JHB–CPT can be 30–60% above what they were two months earlier. The last-minute bucket — flights within seven days — often shows the highest prices of all, particularly for families needing multiple seats together.

The reverse is also true on the way back. The final Friday of the holiday and the Saturday immediately after it are the most expensive return dates. Flying home on the Tuesday or Wednesday before the holiday ends is consistently cheaper and involves less airport chaos.

The 5 routes that spike hardest during SA school holidays

✈ Johannesburg → Cape Town

High surge · Most competitive

The busiest domestic route in SA. FlySafair, Lift and Airlink all compete here, which provides some pricing relief vs routes with fewer carriers. Still climbs 30–50% at peak. Compare JHB–CPT →

✈ Johannesburg → George

Very high surge · Limited seats

The Garden Route gateway. Cemair and FlySafair fly this route. Fewer flights per day means seats sell out faster than JHB–CPT. Book earliest of all holidays routes. Compare JHB–GRJ →

✈ Johannesburg → Durban

High surge · Family favourite

The beach run from the interior. Durbans warm July water pulls Gauteng families every winter. FlySafair and Lift both fly it, but seats disappear fast. Compare JHB–DBN →

✈ Cape Town → Johannesburg

High surge · Weekend spike

Cape Town families heading to Gauteng to visit family. The reverse of the inland-to-coast flow. Departure Fridays and return Sundays hit hardest. Compare CPT–JHB →

✈ Johannesburg → Gqeberha

Sharp surge · Book early

Port Elizabeth / Gqeberha draws Eastern Cape families home for the holidays. FlySafair is the main carrier. Fewer options means sharper price spikes than CPT. Compare JHB–GQA →

✈ Cape Town → Durban

Moderate surge · Scenic route

Popular December and winter holiday leisure route. Connecting families between the two coastal cities. Compare CPT–DBN →

Winter holiday 2026 — 27 June to 20 July: book today

The Term 2 winter holiday is 24 days — the longest school break of the year outside December. It is the peak domestic travel window for SA families who want beach weather (Durban stays warm in July), the Garden Route, or a city break in Cape Town or Johannesburg. It is also the window closest to right now.

At four weeks out, you are in the final price-climb phase on the major routes. Families who started booking in April are already in seats. What remains is the tail of available inventory — which the airlines price at a premium because they know demand is inelastic this close to the holiday. A family of four on JHB–CPT return at current prices is a meaningful spend. Waiting another week or two does not get you a better price; it gets you a worse one and fewer seat options together.

Winter 2026 booking priority: George (GRJ) first — fewest seats. Then Gqeberha. Then Durban. Then Cape Town. Compare across FlySafair, Lift and Airlink before booking because the cheapest carrier changes week to week on the JHB–CPT–JHB route.

Spring holiday 2026 — 24 September to 5 October

The Term 3 spring break is 12 days and tends to be the second-cheapest school holiday window after autumn. September weather in Cape Town is improving but still transitional; Durban is warming up; Johannesburg comes out of its dry winter season. Families using this break for domestic travel usually head coast-to-inland or JHB-to-CPT.

Note that Heritage Day (24 September) falls on the first day of the holiday, creating a public holiday at the start. This makes the Friday 25 September weekend immediately after break starts very busy for flights. Book the spring holiday from mid-July — you have time, but do not leave it past August.

24 September – 5 October 2026 · 12 days

Heritage Day (24 Sept) opens the break. Book from mid-July. Avoid the first and last Friday — fly Tuesday to Thursday for best fares.

December summer holiday 2026 — from 10 December

Term 4 ends 9 December 2026 for most public schools, with some running until 11 December. The December holiday is the longest of the year — roughly five to six weeks — and the single most expensive travel period in the South African domestic calendar. Airlines, car hire companies, and accommodation providers all operate at peak pricing from mid-December through early January.

For December flights, the booking window that consistently returns the best prices is July to August. If you are reading this in May or June, now is the time to lock in December too. September onwards the prices accelerate and seat choice diminishes. The JHB–CPT and JHB–DBN routes in the week before Christmas can hit R3,000–R5,000 per seat one-way on short notice.

From 10 December 2026 · ~5–6 weeks

Most expensive SA travel period. Book July–August for the best prices and seat selection. Do not wait for "deals" in October or November — they rarely appear for December.

Practical tips for family flight bookings during school holidays

Fly mid-week where possible

The first Friday of the holiday and the last Sunday are the most congested, most expensive days. Departing on the Tuesday or Wednesday after the holiday starts — and returning the Wednesday or Thursday before it ends — can save 15–25% on the popular routes, and airports are significantly calmer.

Compare all three main carriers

On routes served by FlySafair, Lift and Airlink, prices shift week to week and even day to day. The cheapest carrier for JHB–CPT in one week is not necessarily cheapest the next. Always compare before booking. On routes where only one carrier flies (George, Hoedspruit, Richards Bay), there is no competition — book as far in advance as possible because prices only move one direction as the departure date approaches.

Book seats together early

Families need seats together. Airlines often cannot guarantee adjacent seats on short notice, particularly in economy. Booking early solves this without paying for seat selection fees. The closer to the holiday, the more likely you end up paying extra just to sit together.

Check the 15 June long weekend

The special school holiday on Monday 15 June plus Youth Day on 16 June creates a 4-day long weekend during Term 2. This is not a full school holiday break, but it drives a significant spike on short-haul routes. If you want a short winter trip to Cape Town or Durban, this weekend is an option — but book it now, not two weeks before.

Lanseria as an alternative for Gauteng families

If OR Tambo fares are elevated, check Lanseria Airport (HLA) in northern Johannesburg. FlySafair and Lift both fly from Lanseria to Cape Town and Durban. Lanseria is smaller, faster, and involves less congestion than OR Tambo during school holiday peak days. Fares are sometimes lower on the same route when booked from HLA. OR Tambo vs Lanseria — which is better for your trip?

Buy Now Pay Later for school holiday flights
