About Flights from Johannesburg to Durban
The weekend escape route. Johannesburg to Durban is just 560 km and 1 hour 15 minutes — so short that the N3 road still tempts some people. But this route shows a completely different fare pattern than JNB–CPT: it's dominated by business Mon–Thu (typically the cheapest window) and leisure weekend escapes (when they climb sharply). December and Easter see the worst congestion on both fares and King Shaka airport ground transfers. This guide isolates the booking windows, explains why midweek Durban fares move harder than any other corridor, and gives you the real ground-transfer costs to the Golden Mile.
Fly vs. drive math: The N3 is 560 km but 7–8 hours of driving in daylight (10+ hours if it rains, which it often does). We've modelled both options on the fly-or-drive Johannesburg to Durban page. Flying wins on time almost always. Driving wins on cost only if you're making a 5+ day stay for a family of 4.

Best Time to Book & Fly
JNB–DUR fares are most competitive in February–April and September–October. The December coastal peak pushes prices up sharply — Durban is one of the most popular domestic destinations over summer. Flights during June/July school holidays also see elevated prices. Book 3–6 weeks out for normal travel, and 8–12 weeks out for December and Easter periods.
Baggage & Booking Notes
Low-cost carriers (FlySafair, CemAir): 7 kg cabin bag included. Checked baggage is a paid add-on — add it at booking to avoid airport surcharges.
Full-service (SAA, Airlink): Typically includes one checked bag in the base fare. Confirm your specific fare rules at booking.
Always check total cost including baggage before committing — the cheapest base fare can become the most expensive once bags are added.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long is the flight from Johannesburg to Durban?
Just under 1 hour — typically 50–60 minutes in the air. It is one of the shortest domestic routes in South Africa.
Which airlines fly JNB to DUR?
FlySafair, Airlink, CemAir, and SAA. FlySafair has the most frequent services at competitive prices.
Is it worth flying or driving Johannesburg to Durban?
Flying wins on time — the N3 drive is about 5–6 hours without traffic. If you're travelling for a long weekend, flying saves a significant chunk of your time in destination.
Which airport serves Durban?
King Shaka International Airport (DUR), located at La Mercy, about 35 km north of Durban CBD. Allow 45–60 minutes to the city during peak traffic.
What's the cheapest time to fly JNB to Durban?
Shoulder months (February–April, September–October) and midweek departures are cheapest. December is the most expensive period by far.
Are there nonstop flights?
Yes. All carriers on this route fly nonstop. The short distance means there's no hub connecting option that makes sense.
What is the baggage policy on this route?
FlySafair includes a 7 kg carry-on; checked bags are paid add-ons. SAA and Airlink often include one checked bag. Confirm at booking.
Can I hire a car at King Shaka Airport?
Yes. All major car hire companies operate at King Shaka. Book in advance during peak season — vehicles can be scarce over Christmas.
If the fare is the problem, not the route
Most people who abandon a Johannesburg to Durban booking do not change their mind about the trip — the price lands in the wrong week. These are the legitimate ways South Africans spread or reduce the cost, with the catches stated plainly rather than glossed over.
Getting out of King Shaka — plan this one before you fly
Durban is the exception among South Africa's three biggest airports.
Cape Town International has the municipal MyCiTi A01 bus. OR Tambo has the Gautrain.
King Shaka has neither. There is no rail link and no
municipal bus route to the airport — ACSA's own public transport listing for King Shaka
contains only private shuttle operators and taxi companies.
What that means in practice. If you land at CPT or JNB
without a plan, there is a public option waiting. At King Shaka there is not. Your realistic
choices are a shared shuttle, a metered taxi, an e-hailing app, or a hire car — and the
airport sits well north of the city at La Mercy, so it is not a short or cheap hop in any of them.
This is the one arrival in South Africa worth arranging before you board.
Shuttle operators listed by the airport. ACSA lists four
shuttle services operating from outside the International Arrivals terminal:
Airbus Shuttle Service, Margate Shuttle Service, Skyways Shuttle Service and Southern Shuttle.
A separate list of accredited taxi companies operates from the arrivals terminal itself.
Contact numbers for all of them are published on the airport's own page, linked below.
We are not quoting you a fare. These are independent
private operators with no common published tariff, and the figures circulating on travel sites
for this exact trip disagree by several hundred rand. Phone two of them and compare —
that will take you five minutes and beat any number we could print here.

Frequently Asked Questions
How far in advance should I book? Many travellers find good deals by booking 2–6 weeks before departure, especially outside of peak school holidays and long weekends.
