Johannesburg has two commercial airports: OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) and Lanseria International Airport (HLA). Most travellers default to OR Tambo without a second thought. But for a large portion of Johannesburg residents, Lanseria is the smarter choice — faster, less congested, and sometimes cheaper. Here's how to decide.

OR Tambo International Airport (JNB)

OR Tambo is one of Africa's busiest airports and the main international gateway for South Africa. It handles the vast majority of domestic and all international flights from Johannesburg. Located in Kempton Park, it's about 25 km east of Sandton and 40 km from Soweto.

Pros of OR Tambo:

• All airlines and all routes — the only option for international flights
• Gautrain direct rail link to Sandton and Pretoria
• More frequency and more price competition
• Extensive facilities — lounges, restaurants, shops

Cons of OR Tambo:

• Very large and can feel overwhelming, especially Terminal A during peak hours
• Traffic on the N3 and R24 approach roads can add 30+ minutes to journey time
• Queues at security and bag drop can be significant during peak periods
• Parking is expensive for longer trips

Lanseria International Airport (HLA)

Lanseria sits north of Johannesburg on the R512, near Muldersdrift. It's 35 km from Sandton but significantly closer for residents of Fourways, Midrand, Centurion, Roodepoort, Randburg, and the West Rand. Served primarily by FlySafair, it offers direct flights to Cape Town and Durban.

Pros of Lanseria:

• Much smaller and less congested — check-in to departure gate in 20 minutes is realistic
• Closer for north Johannesburg residents (Sandton, Fourways, Midrand, Centurion)
• Easy parking, significantly cheaper than OR Tambo

Cons of Lanseria:
