Travelstart vs Booking Direct: Which Is Cheaper in South Africa?
Or jump straight to a popular route:
The short version
- Same seat, not always the same price. On our checks the same FlySafair and LIFT flights were R154 cheaper on the airlines' own websites than on Travelstart, before Travelstart's booking fee. On SAA the gap was only R36.
- Book direct when you already know which airline is cheapest on your date and you only need one airline.
- Book on Travelstart when you don't know which airline is cheapest, when a return on two airlines is cheaper, or when you want to pay in Payflex instalments.
- Our data: across 22 route-and-date searches on 26 October 2026, five different airlines came out cheapest. Checking only one airline's website would have missed the cheapest fare on at least 14 of the 22.
You've found a fare. Now the doubt kicks in: would it be cheaper on FlySafair's or SAA's own website? It's the right question, and the honest answer is "it depends on one thing you can check in a minute". This page shows you that check, the real fare data behind it, and exactly when each option wins.
Disclosure: VistaVoyage earns a commission when you book through Travelstart, never when you book direct. That's why we show you when direct wins too.
What's actually different
When you book a FlySafair, SAA, Airlink, LIFT or CemAir flight on Travelstart, the seat is sold from the airline's own inventory and the ticket carries an airline booking reference. You can look it up on the airline's manage-booking page.
The price is not always the same. On 27 October 2026 we priced the same two flights on Travelstart and on the airlines' own websites, one adult, Wednesday 25 November, Johannesburg to Cape Town:
| Flight | Airline's own site | Travelstart | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| FlySafair FA806, 20:30 Lite fare, cabin bag | R1,985.29 | R2,139 | R154 more on Travelstart |
| LIFT GE111, 09:30 Economy, no checked bag | R1,975 | R2,129 | R154 more on Travelstart |
| LIFT GE111 with a 23 kg bag | R2,195 | R2,374 | R179 more on Travelstart |
| SAA SA303, 06:05 Saver fare, checked bag included (checked 28 Oct) | R2,122.56 | R2,159 | R36 more on Travelstart |
Direct prices include taxes and fees as shown before payment. Travelstart adds its booking fee on top of its price. On SAA the gap was much smaller: R36 on the same 06:05 flight. We haven't run the same check for Airlink yet.
The differences are around the fare:
- The fee. Travelstart charges one flat booking fee per booking (different for domestic, regional and international), shown as its own line before you pay. As a guide, Absa's rewards terms for Travelstart bookings list fixed fees of R169 domestic and R329 international. Booking direct, there's no agency fee.
- The search. One Travelstart search shows every airline on your route and date. Booking direct, you check each airline's website one by one.
- Mixed airlines. SA domestic returns are priced as two one-way fares, so Travelstart lets you fly out on one airline and back on another in a single booking.
- Payment. Travelstart offers Payflex: four interest-free payments over six weeks. Booking direct, you usually pay in full upfront.
- After you book. Changes and refunds go through Travelstart, with an administration fee on top of the airline's own fees. Travelstart says refunds can take 6 to 8 weeks.
Who was cheapest: 22 real searches
On 26 October 2026 we searched 11 of the busiest domestic routes on two dates: an ordinary Wednesday (25 November) and the December peak (Friday 18 December). These are the cheapest one-way fares Travelstart's live search showed, before its booking fee. Tap any fare to see today's price for that route and date.
| Route | Wed 25 Nov | Fri 18 Dec |
|---|---|---|
| Johannesburg → Cape Town | R1,929 › SAA, bag incl. | R2,559 › CemAir, bag incl. |
| Cape Town → Johannesburg | R1,529 › SAA, bag incl. | R1,889 › Airlink, bag incl. |
| Johannesburg → Durban | R839 › SAA, bag incl. | R1,449 › SAA, bag incl. |
| Durban → Johannesburg | R839 › SAA, bag incl. | R1,319 › Airlink, bag incl. |
| Cape Town → Durban | R1,479 › LIFT, cabin bag only | R2,649 › FlySafair, cabin bag only |
| Johannesburg → Gqeberha | R1,099 › SAA, bag incl. | R2,279 › SAA, bag incl. |
| Cape Town → Gqeberha | R1,089 › FlySafair, cabin bag only | R1,909 › Airlink, bag incl. |
| Johannesburg → George | R2,709 › FlySafair, cabin bag only | R3,319 › FlySafair, cabin bag only |
| Johannesburg → East London | R1,269 › FlySafair, cabin bag only | R2,589 › FlySafair, cabin bag only |
| Johannesburg → Bloemfontein | R979 › FlySafair, cabin bag only | R1,429 › FlySafair, cabin bag only |
| Johannesburg → Hoedspruit | R2,469 › Airlink, bag incl. | R2,909 › Airlink, bag incl. |
Count the airlines in that table: FlySafair was cheapest 8 times, SAA 7, Airlink 5, LIFT once and CemAir once. Two things stand out:
- The cheapest airline changes with the date. Johannesburg–Cape Town was SAA on 25 November and CemAir on 18 December. Cape Town–Johannesburg flipped from SAA to Airlink.
- The "budget airline" isn't always the budget option. On the routes where SAA was cheapest, its fare included a checked bag, and FlySafair's cheapest fares here didn't.
So if your habit is "just check FlySafair", you'd have missed the cheapest fare on 14 of these 22 searches. If it's "just check SAA", you'd have missed 15. On a busy route that difference is often more than the booking fee. On a quiet route with one airline, it isn't.

The 60-second test
Don't guess. Do this before you pay, every time:
- Search your route and date once on Travelstart. Use the search on this page. Note the cheapest airline and its fare.
- Add what you actually need. If you're checking a bag, compare fares with the bag included. FlySafair and LIFT charge for checked bags; SAA and Airlink usually include one. Our baggage cost calculator does the sum for you.
- Open that one airline's website for the same flight and time.
- Compare the totals. If the airline's own price is lower by more than Travelstart's booking fee, book direct. If not, or if you want Payflex or a mixed-airline return, book on Travelstart.
The point of step 1 is that you only need to open one airline website, the right one, instead of five.
When booking direct wins
We'd rather you trust this page than click every link on it, so here is when we'd book direct ourselves:
- You're flying FlySafair or LIFT and you already know which flight you want. On our check their own websites were R154 cheaper, and you also skip Travelstart's booking fee. Standard and bag-included fares are also sold directly.
- Only one airline flies the route. There's nothing to compare, so the booking fee buys you nothing. Many smaller airports are served by one airline.
- You have airline loyalty points or status you want to earn or spend.
- Flexibility matters more than price. If there's a real chance you'll change the trip, one party (the airline) is simpler than two.
- The airline's own price is lower by more than the fee after you've run the 60-second test.
And when Travelstart wins: busy routes with three or more airlines (Johannesburg–Cape Town, Johannesburg–Durban, Cape Town–Durban), returns where the cheapest way back is a different airline, family bookings where Payflex spreads the cost, and anyone who just wants the cheapest fare without opening five websites.
Frequently asked questions
Is it cheaper to book flights directly with the airline in South Africa?
Often, yes, for FlySafair and LIFT. On 27 October 2026 we priced the same flights both ways: FlySafair FA806 on Wed 25 November was R1,985.29 on flysafair.co.za and R2,139 on Travelstart, and LIFT GE111 was R1,975 on lift.co.za and R2,129 on Travelstart, before Travelstart’s booking fee. Travelstart is still useful for finding which airline is cheapest on your date, because in our 26 October checks, five different airlines came out cheapest across 22 route-and-date searches.
How much is the Travelstart booking fee?
Travelstart charges one flat fee per booking, different for domestic, regional and international flights, shown as its own line before you pay. Absa’s rewards terms for Travelstart bookings list fixed booking fees of R169 for domestic and R329 for international flights. Check the payment page for the fee on your booking.
Is my ticket real if I book on Travelstart?
Yes. The ticket is issued on the airline’s own system with an airline booking reference. You can look it up with your surname on the airline’s manage-booking page.
Can I book a return with two different airlines?
Yes, on Travelstart. South African domestic returns are priced as two one-way fares, so you can fly out on one airline and back on another in one booking. Booking direct, you would need two separate bookings on two airline websites.
Who do I contact for changes if I book on Travelstart?
Travelstart, not the airline. The airline’s fare rules decide what can be changed, and Travelstart adds an administration fee on changes and refunds. Travelstart says refunds can take 6 to 8 weeks. If flexibility matters more than price, booking direct gives you one less party to deal with.
Can I pay for flights in instalments?
On Travelstart, yes: Payflex splits the total into four interest-free payments over six weeks. Booking direct, you usually pay the full amount upfront, so check the airline’s own payment options.
Still deciding?
The question was never really "Travelstart or the airline". It was "which airline is cheapest on my date, all-in". Answer that first with one search, then book wherever the total is lowest.
