Which South African Airports Have International Flights?

Three. That is the honest answer, and it is not the answer most comparison sites give you.

Only three South African airports have meaningful scheduled international passenger service: OR Tambo (JNB), Cape Town (CPT) and King Shaka in Durban (DUR). Every other airport in the country — including Lanseria, despite the word "International" on the building — operates domestic flights only. If you are flying abroad from anywhere else, you are connecting, whether the booking site tells you so or not.

The three international gateways

OR Tambo International, Johannesburg (JNB)

Africa's busiest airport and South Africa's primary long-haul gateway. If a route exists from South Africa at all, it usually exists from here first. Long-haul carriers serve Europe, the Middle East, Asia, the Americas and the rest of Africa, and it is the only South African airport with a genuinely broad intercontinental network.

Practical note: OR Tambo has introduced the Biometric Movement Control System at immigration, and Airlink has publicly warned travellers to allow extra time for both departures and arrivals because of longer queues. If you have a tight domestic-to-international connection here, that warning is worth taking seriously.

Cape Town International (CPT)

The second gateway, with a substantial international network that has grown considerably in recent years — Europe, the Middle East and regional African routes. For travellers in the Western Cape it is almost always the better start point than backtracking to Johannesburg.

King Shaka International, Durban (DUR)

The smallest of the three by international reach, and the one most often misrepresented. Durban's international network is genuinely limited — there are no nonstop services from Durban to Europe or North America. What Durban does have is real and useful:

  • Durban → Dubai — Emirates, nonstop, roughly 8 hours 20 minutes. Durban's only intercontinental route.
  • Durban → Harare — Airlink, nonstop, around 2 hours, seven flights a week as of July 2026.
  • Regional services to Mozambique and Eswatini.

Anything else advertised as a "Durban international flight" is a connecting itinerary, usually through Johannesburg.

Lanseria is a domestic airport

This one catches people out constantly, and it is the single most common misconception we see. Lanseria International Airport currently operates scheduled domestic services only. Its network is five routes: Cape Town, Durban, George, Gqeberha and East London.

The "International" in the name is historical and reflects its licensing, not its current scheduled network. If you live in the northern suburbs and Lanseria is your convenient airport, an international trip still means getting to OR Tambo — and you should budget the transfer time and cost into your comparison, because it can wipe out the fare saving that made Lanseria attractive in the first place.

Flying abroad from a domestic airport

George, Gqeberha, East London, Bloemfontein, Kimberley, Polokwane, Nelspruit, Upington, Richards Bay, Mthatha and the rest are domestic. That does not mean you cannot fly internationally from them — it means your journey has a connection in it. Two rules make that go smoothly:

  • Book it as one through-fare, not two separate tickets. On a single ticket the airline owns the connection: if your domestic leg runs late and you miss the international one, rebooking is their problem. On separate tickets it is entirely yours, and you buy a new ticket at the counter.
  • Give yourself real connection time at OR Tambo. Domestic arrival to international departure means changing terminals and clearing emigration. Three hours is comfortable; ninety minutes is a gamble, especially with the current immigration queues.

A note on currency, because it affects what you pay

No. Lanseria operates scheduled domestic services only — Cape Town, Durban, George, Gqeberha and East London. Any international trip requires connecting through OR Tambo or Cape Town.

Can I fly direct from George or Gqeberha to an international destination?

No. Both are domestic airports. International trips route through Johannesburg or Cape Town and should be booked as a single through-fare.

Does Durban have flights to Europe?

Not nonstop. Durban's only intercontinental route is Emirates to Dubai. European journeys from Durban connect, most often via Johannesburg or Dubai.
