Each price is the airline’s cheapest one-way economy fare for one adult on Travelstart’s live search, checked on 20 October 2026. The grey line is the itinerary behind that price (where you change planes, total journey time, checked bags) when the airline’s cheapest listed flight matched the fare. Fares change daily. Tap any price to see today’s fare for that date.
Your departure city decides it
Johannesburg: Qatar, almost every time. Qatar Airways was cheaper than Emirates on 14 of the 16 Johannesburg searches, by R60 (London in December) to R2,840 (New York in December). The two exceptions were Frankfurt and Dubai in December, where Emirates was R120 and R980 cheaper.
Cape Town: Emirates. Emirates won 6 of 8 Cape Town searches. In November the gap was small (Qatar was R110 cheaper to Dubai and R1,920 cheaper to Amsterdam), but in December Qatar’s cheapest Cape Town fares jumped to R14,109–R18,709 while Emirates stayed between R9,599 and R11,859.
Durban: a split. Emirates was cheaper in November (R6,579 to Dubai, R7,079 to London), Qatar in December (R8,589 and R9,279). If Dubai itself is where you are going, note that Emirates flies there non-stop from Durban (8h 20m), while Qatar’s cheapest December fare went via Doha and took 24h 5m.
What December does to both
Across the same 14 routes, the average cheapest Emirates fare rose from R7,214 on Wednesday 25 November to R10,382 on Saturday 12 December (+44%). Qatar’s rose from R7,414 to R11,341 (+53%). If your dates are flexible, the cheapest move is to leave before the school holidays start, not to switch airlines.
Kenya Airways was the exception: its cheapest Johannesburg–London fare was R5,839 on both dates. See our December flight guide for domestic routes.
Baggage on the cheapest fares
On almost every cheapest fare we found, both airlines included two checked bags of 23 kg each, plus a 7 kg cabin bag. The exceptions are worth knowing before you book:
- Emirates’ cheapest Johannesburg–New York fare on 25 November had no checked bag (cabin bag only).
- Qatar’s cheapest Cape Town–London fare on 25 November showed one 23 kg bag.
- Emirates’ cheapest Johannesburg–Frankfurt fare in December showed one 23 kg bag.
For comparison, the cheapest British Airways, Air France, KLM and Virgin Atlantic fares on these routes usually had no checked bag at all, and Etihad’s used a 40 kg weight allowance instead of pieces. Always check the baggage line on the fare you pick, not the airline’s general policy. Our baggage guide covers the South African domestic airlines.
Stopover and journey time
Emirates connects in Dubai and Qatar in Doha, so both are one-stop to Europe and Asia. The cheapest fare is not always the quickest one:
- Johannesburg–London, 25 Nov: Emirates’ cheapest took 17h 35m, Qatar’s 18h 40m.
- Johannesburg–Paris, 25 Nov: Qatar was R230 cheaper but took 31h 45m. Emirates took 18h 35m.
- To Dubai: Emirates flies non-stop from Johannesburg (8h), Cape Town (9h 25m) and Durban (8h 20m). Qatar goes via Doha, and its cheapest Johannesburg–Dubai itinerary took 19h 55m.
If a long layover is the price of a few hundred rand, it is often worth paying the difference.
When neither is cheapest
Emirates or Qatar was the cheapest airline on only 11 of the 28 searches. The rest went to:
- Kenya Airways, cheapest 7 times, via Nairobi with two 23 kg bags. Johannesburg–London was R5,839 on both dates; Cape Town–London in December was R6,599, against R9,749 on Emirates.
- Turkish Airlines, cheapest 6 times, via Istanbul. From Cape Town in November it was the cheapest airline to London (R4,869), Frankfurt (R4,819), Amsterdam (R5,289) and Dubai (R5,469). Those Cape Town fares left at 00:55.
- Air Europa (Amsterdam and Frankfurt in December), Air France (Cape Town–Frankfurt in December) and Etihad (Johannesburg–Paris in November) once or twice each.
So the honest answer to “Emirates or Qatar?” is often “neither”. Search all airlines for your date before you decide.
Booking: Travelstart or the airline?
Every fare on this page is from Travelstart’s search, where you can compare all of these airlines in one place. VistaVoyage earns a commission if you book there, and it does not change the price you see. How we checked
On 20 October 2026 we ran Travelstart’s live search for one adult, one-way, economy, on 14 routes (from Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban to London, Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Istanbul, Dubai, Bangkok and New York) for two dates: Wednesday 25 November and Saturday 12 December 2026. That is 28 searches. For each, we recorded the lowest fare Travelstart showed for each airline, then filtered to that airline to read the flight, stopover, journey time and baggage. Where the cheapest listed flight did not match the airline’s lowest fare, we show the fare only. Fares change daily; we date every number so you can tell how old it is. Spotted an error?
