LIFT Check-In: Times, Cut-Offs & How It Works
LIFT online check-in opens 24 hours before departure and closes 45 minutes before your flight — the latest online cut-off of any South African airline. Airport counters and bag drop also close 45 minutes before departure. Boarding gates open 30 minutes and close 15 minutes before departure.
Why LIFT’s 45-minute cut-off matters
Every deadline at LIFT converges on one number: 45 minutes. Online check-in closes 45 minutes before departure. Airport counters close 45 minutes before. Bag drop closes 45 minutes before — and that one is written into LIFT’s conditions of carriage, so a late bag simply doesn’t fly.
The practical upside: LIFT gives you the longest online check-in window in South Africa. FlySafair and Airlink close online check-in at 60 minutes, SAA at 90 minutes for domestic. If you’re the type who checks in from the Gautrain, LIFT is the most forgiving airline in the country — by a full 15 to 45 minutes.
Online and mobile check-in
Check in through LIFT’s website from 24 hours before departure. Download, email or print your boarding pass — all three work at security. If you have no bags to drop, go straight to the security gates; there’s no need to touch a counter.
LIFT’s fare model changes what check-in feels like: seat selection is included rather than sold as an extra, and if you’re on an Economy No-Bag fare there is no checked bag in your booking at all — walking straight past the counters is the whole point. On an Economy Bag fare, your checked bag still has to be at the bag drop by the 45-minute mark.
At the airport: counters, Premium and boarding
LIFT’s counters open 2 hours before departure. If you’re flying LIFT Premium, look for the dedicated Premium check-in counter, and use the Fast Track security lane where available.
Boarding gates open 30 minutes before departure and close strictly 15 minutes before. LIFT’s conditions of carriage require you at the gate at least 30 minutes before departure — miss the gate closure and you’re denied boarding, and any checked bag gets offloaded.
LIFT’s own guidance: arrive 90 minutes to 2 hours before your flight. On the JNB–CPT trunk route at peak business hours, security at OR Tambo is the real constraint — the 45-minute cut-off feels generous until you’ve queued 30 minutes for the scanners.
What you need at check-in
- Adults: ID book, driver’s licence or passport.
- Children: a certified physical copy of the birth certificate (abridged or unabridged), not older than 3 months — LIFT is specific about this, and a photo on your phone doesn’t count.
- Online check-in passengers: your ID is re-checked at the boarding gate, so keep it handy — not in the checked bag.

How LIFT’s cut-offs compare to other SA airlines
The same missed alarm plays out differently depending on whose plane you’re on. Here is every major SA domestic airline’s check-in window side by side:
| Airline | Online check-in opens | Online closes | Airport counter / bag drop | Recommended arrival |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FlySafair | 24 hrs before | 60 min before | Desks close 40 min (domestic) / 60 min (regional) | 90 min before departure |
| LIFT | 24 hrs before | 45 min before | Counters & bag drop close 45 min | 90–120 min before departure |
| Airlink | 24 hrs before | 60 min before | Counters close 30 min (dom) / 50 min (intl); bag drop 60 min | 2 hrs (dom) / 3 hrs (intl) report time |
| SAA | 24 hrs before | 90 min dom / 2 hrs intl (web) | Domestic counters close 45 min; intl 60 min | 90 min (dom) / 2.5–3 hrs (intl) |
| CemAir | 24 hrs before | Not separately published | Counters open 90 min, close 45 min; bag cut-off 45 min | 90 min before departure |
Cut-off times verified against each airline’s official published guidance, July 2026. Airlines can change these without notice — your booking confirmation is final word.

Built in Johannesburg, for South African travellers
VistaVoyage is run from Johannesburg by one person, not a global aggregator with a South African landing page. Domestic routes are the core of this site. We also cover international routes — but specifically international flights departing South Africa, priced and paid in rand.
- Every fare in ZAR. No conversion guesswork — you see rand, you pay rand.
- Baggage and route facts hand-checked against each airline's own published information. Last verified July 2026.
- Local knowledge, not scraped data. Salary-cycle timing, school-holiday peaks, Lanseria vs OR Tambo, which airport is actually right for Kruger.
- Free to use. VistaVoyage earns a commission if you book through Travelstart. It costs you nothing extra and never changes the fares you are shown.
