How Early Should You Arrive at the Airport in South Africa?

Every airline's cut-offs · checked 9 October 2026 · domestic and international

The short answer

  • Domestic flight: arrive 2 hours before departure. That is what FlySafair and Airlink ask for, and it leaves room for security queues at OR Tambo, Cape Town and King Shaka.
  • International or regional flight: arrive 3 hours before.
  • The deadline that actually strands people is the counter and bag-drop cut-off: 30 to 45 minutes before a domestic departure depending on the airline, and up to 60 minutes on Airlink's bag drop.
  • Checked in online with no bag? You still need to clear security and be at the gate before it closes, 15 minutes before domestic departures on FlySafair, LIFT and Airlink.

Miss the counter cut-off and the airline will not accept you or your bag, even if the plane is still at the gate. Online check-in (from 24 hours before on every SA airline) only saves you the counter if you have no checked bag.

December and Easter

FlySafair asks passengers to arrive even earlier in the busy season. In the December holidays (schools close on 9 December 2026) and over Easter 2027 (26–29 March), add 30 minutes to the 2-hour rule at OR Tambo and Cape Town, check in online the day before, and add bags online in advance: it is cheaper, and it means a shorter bag-drop queue rather than the full check-in queue. FlySafair charges R375 for a bag bought at the airport against R185 online.

Frequently asked questions

How early should I get to the airport for a domestic flight in South Africa?

Two hours before departure. FlySafair and Airlink both ask domestic passengers to arrive two hours early, and airport counters close 30 to 45 minutes before departure depending on the airline.

How early should I arrive at OR Tambo for an international flight?

Three hours before departure. International check-in closes about an hour before on most airlines, and OR Tambo security and passport control can be slow at peak times.

What time does FlySafair check-in close?

FlySafair check-in desks and bag drop close 40 minutes before domestic departures and 60 minutes before international ones. Gates close 15 minutes before domestic departures.

Can I still fly if I arrive after check-in closes?

Usually not. Once the counter or bag-drop cut-off has passed, the airline can refuse you even if the aircraft has not left. Treat the cut-off, not the departure time, as your deadline.
