Excess baggage
On domestic flights within South Africa, Airlink charges R38.00 per kilogram plus 15% VAT for weight above your allowance, the same rate it uses for sports equipment and domestic pets. A 5 kg overweight bag therefore costs about R218.50. On regional flights a flat amount per route applies. Excess baggage is non-refundable even if you don't use it.
Why Airlink is often cheapest once you have luggage
Because the 20 kg bag is already in the fare, Airlink regularly beats the low-cost fare plus a bag. On our live check for Friday 18 December 2026, Airlink was the cheapest Johannesburg → Cape Town option at R1,659 with a 20 kg bag included. Airlink was also the only airline in our results on routes such as Cape Town–Upington, Cape Town–Kimberley and Mthatha–Johannesburg.
