Compare fares with bags on every airline
Is FlySafair still the cheapest once you add a bag?
Often not. On our live check of Johannesburg → Cape Town for 28 October 2026 (searched 7 October), the cheapest fares were:
| Airline | Fare | With one checked bag |
|---|---|---|
| SAA | R1,949 | R1,949 (23 kg included) |
| LIFT | R1,949 | R2,154 (+R205 shown on Travelstart) |
| FlySafair | R2,029 | R2,214 at FlySafair's R185 online price |
FlySafair's fare was competitive without luggage, but with a suitcase the full-service fare that already included a bag came out cheapest. FlySafair also adds a separately listed fuel surcharge: R581.90 per flight on Johannesburg–Cape Town (updated 22 September 2026), shown during booking. Compare the final total, not the headline fare.
Rules that catch people out
- Your bag must have a flat side. Round bags, or bags with long straps, are refused at check-in. Wrapping at the airport costs about R90 per bag, cash only.
- Power banks and spare lithium batteries go in your hand luggage, never in the checked bag.
- No pets. FlySafair does not carry live animals.
- Firearms (sporting or hunting rifles and shotguns only) need the R1,265 carriage service, booked at least 72 hours ahead on a Standard or Premium fare.
- Check-in closes 40 minutes before domestic departures; FlySafair asks you to arrive 2 hours before. See FlySafair check-in times.
