CemAir Check-In: Times, Cut-Offs & How It Works

CemAir’s check-in structure

CemAir keeps its published deadlines refreshingly simple: counters open 90 minutes before departure and close 45 minutes before, and CemAir states these times are standard across all domestic routes and all regional routes alike. There is no separate domestic-versus-regional counter table to decode.

Online check-in opens 24 hours before departure on the CemAir website and lets you pre-select your seat. Unlike most carriers, CemAir does not clearly publish a single online closing time — third-party sources quote anything from 45 minutes to 2 hours. Treat the 45-minute counter cut-off as the deadline that actually binds you, and check in online as early as you can rather than relying on a late window that may not exist.

Why CemAir check-in feels different

CemAir flies small regional aircraft — CRJ jets, Dash 8 turboprops and 19-seat Beechcraft 1900Ds — into airports that often handle only a handful of departures a day. That changes the experience in ways the timetable doesn’t show:

• The counter is open for a window, not all day. At small stations the CemAir desk is staffed around the specific flight. Arriving three hours early doesn’t help; arriving 40 minutes early is fatal.
• Fewer seats means fewer recovery options. On a 19-seat Beechcraft there is no spare capacity to roll you onto, and often no second flight that day.
• Checked baggage is usually already in your fare. CemAir’s fares typically include a checked allowance, so most passengers use the counter rather than walking past it — build the bag-drop queue into your 90 minutes.

Note that at some smaller stations, shorter counter cut-offs (around 30 minutes) have been published historically. Confirm the cut-off on your ticket for small-airport departures rather than assuming the standard 45 minutes.

Connecting from an international flight

This is the CemAir detail that catches travellers out. CemAir is a point-to-point airline — it does not generally offer through-ticketing or through-baggage with international carriers unless a specific interline arrangement applies to your booking.

In practice, if you land at OR Tambo on a long-haul flight and connect onto CemAir, you must clear immigration and customs, collect your bags, and check in again at the CemAir counter. Bags cannot leave the arrivals hall uncleared — that is a state regulatory requirement, not an airline preference.

CemAir’s own recommendation: allow a minimum of 2 hours between your international arrival and your CemAir departure. Given the 45-minute counter close, a 2-hour buffer is genuinely the floor, not a cushion. At OR Tambo, CemAir domestic flights operate from Terminal B.

What you need at check-in

• Adults: South African ID, driver’s licence or passport for domestic flights; passport for regional routes.
• Children: a birth certificate or certified copy for domestic travel.
• Excess baggage: CemAir accepts excess on a standby basis only — if there is space. Buying the allowance online in advance is the safer route than gambling on capacity at the counter.
