SAA Check-In: Times, Cut-Offs & How It Works
SAA check-in opens 24 hours before departure on flysaa.com or the SAA app. Web check-in closes 90 minutes before domestic and 2 hours before international departures — but mobile check-in stays open later, closing 60 minutes before domestic flights. Domestic counters close 45 minutes before departure.
The detail almost nobody explains: web and mobile close at different times
SAA runs two online check-in cut-offs, and they are not the same:
| Channel | Domestic close | International/regional close |
|---|---|---|
| Web check-in (flysaa.com) | 90 min before departure | 2 hrs before departure |
| Mobile check-in (phone / SAA app) | 60 min before departure | 90 min before departure |
Translation: if you’ve missed the 90-minute web cut-off for a domestic flight, you have not necessarily missed online check-in — pull out your phone. Mobile check-in buys you an extra 30 minutes on both domestic and international departures. This is published on SAA’s own check-in page and is the most useful piece of SAA check-in knowledge that never makes it into booking confirmations.
Online check-in: seats, groups and boarding passes
Check-in opens 24 hours before departure. Log in early if seat choice matters — seat selection at check-in is free where applicable, and the earlier you’re in, the better the map looks. Travelling as a group on one booking? SAA lets you check everyone in at once and email all the boarding passes.
No printer? Print at the self-service kiosks at the airport, or collect the pass at an SAA counter. Checked in with hand luggage only? Go straight to the boarding gate. With bags, head for the bag drop counter.
Airport check-in and counters
For domestic departures, SAA’s current published guidance: counters open 2 hours before and close 45 minutes before departure; SAA recommends checking in at least 90 minutes before domestic flights. For international departures, counters open 3 hours before and close 1 hour before departure — and SAA advises arriving 2.5 to 3 hours early, with US-bound flights at the top of that range.
Route exceptions exist. Certain African routes carry earlier check-in closure times than the standard international cut-off. If you’re flying SAA to a West or Central African destination, verify the closure time on your e-ticket rather than assuming the standard hour.
Voyager members and documents
Add your Voyager number during check-in if it isn’t on the booking — miles claims after the fact are slower than getting the number on the boarding pass. Voyager status also determines extra baggage allowances, which are applied at bag drop.
- Domestic: government-issued ID, passport, SA driver’s licence, or refugee ID. Physical documents only — a photo of your ID on a phone is not accepted.
- Children under 18: birth certificate for domestic travel.
- International: valid passport plus visas; check destination entry rules well before travel.
How SAA’s cut-offs compare to other SA airlines
The same missed alarm plays out differently depending on whose plane you’re on. Here is every major SA domestic airline’s check-in window side by side:
| Airline | Online check-in opens | Online closes | Airport counter / bag drop | Recommended arrival |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FlySafair | 24 hrs before | 60 min before | Desks close 40 min (domestic) / 60 min (regional) | 90 min before departure |
| LIFT | 24 hrs before | 45 min before | Counters & bag drop close 45 min | 90–120 min before departure |
| Airlink | 24 hrs before | 60 min before | Counters close 30 min (dom) / 50 min (intl); bag drop 60 min | 2 hrs (dom) / 3 hrs (intl) report time |
| SAA | 24 hrs before | 90 min dom / 2 hrs intl (web) | Domestic counters close 45 min; intl 60 min | 90 min (dom) / 2.5–3 hrs (intl) |
| CemAir | 24 hrs before | Not separately published | Counters open 90 min, close 45 min; bag cut-off 45 min | 90 min before departure |
Cut-off times verified against each airline’s official published guidance, July 2026. Airlines can change these without notice — your booking confirmation is final word.

A South African flight site
Built in Johannesburg, for South African travellers
VistaVoyage is run from Johannesburg by one person, not a global aggregator with a South African landing page. Domestic routes are the core of this site. We also cover international routes — but specifically international flights departing South Africa, priced and paid in rand.
- Every fare in ZAR. No conversion guesswork — you see rand, you pay rand.
- Baggage and route facts hand-checked against each airline's own published information. Last verified July 2026.
- Local knowledge, not scraped data. Salary-cycle timing, school-holiday peaks, Lanseria vs OR Tambo, which airport is actually right for Kruger.
- Free to use. VistaVoyage earns a commission if you book through Travelstart. It costs you nothing extra and never changes the fares you are shown.
