Bus or Flight? Intercape vs Flying in South Africa, With Real Prices
Or jump straight to a popular route:
The short version
- Joburg → Cape Town: bus from R792 and about 20 hours; flight from R1,929 with a bag and about 2 hours. Flying costs about R76 more per hour saved. For most people, fly.
- Joburg → Durban: bus from R340 and 7½ to 11 hours; flight from R839. Flying saves only about 3½ hours door to door. On price alone, take the bus.
- December changes the maths: flights rise fastest, so book early or the bus gets more attractive.
On a long South African route, the bus can cost half the airfare. The question is what you're paying for with the difference: hours, a night's sleep, or nothing much. We put real Intercape and airline prices side by side for the two routes people ask about most.
Disclosure: VistaVoyage earns a commission when you book a flight through Travelstart. We don't earn anything from bus tickets, and we tell you where the bus wins anyway.
Johannesburg to Cape Town: bus vs flight
| Intercape bus | Flight | |
|---|---|---|
| Cheapest fare | R792 Saver (Sun 1 Nov); most departures R792–R980 | R1,929 › SAA, checked bag included (Wed 25 Nov) |
| Journey time | about 20 hours (19h to 21h) | about 2 hours in the air; about 5 hours door to door |
| Overnight? | Yes on most departures: Sleepliner seats recline further | No |
| Departs from | Johannesburg city (Park Station area) | OR Tambo or Lanseria |
The flight costs R1,137 more and saves roughly 15 hours door to door. That's about R76 per hour. If your time is worth more than that, or you'd lose a day's leave on the bus, fly. If you're travelling on a tight budget with time to spare, the overnight bus saves money and a night's accommodation.
Johannesburg to Durban: bus vs flight
| Intercape bus | Flight | |
|---|---|---|
| Cheapest fare | R340 Saver express (Sun 1 Nov); most departures R340–R460 | R839 › SAA, checked bag included (Wed 25 Nov) |
| Journey time | 7½ to 11 hours | about 1 hour in the air; about 4 hours door to door |
| Departures | Morning and overnight services | Many daily flights on SAA, Airlink, FlySafair and LIFT |
Here the bus is hard to beat. The flight costs R499 more and saves only about 3½ hours once you count getting to the airport early and from King Shaka into town, which is about R143 per hour saved. Fly if you're going for a short trip and every hour counts, or if a fare sale brings the flight close to the bus price.

Airfares move daily. A midweek flight can come close to the bus.
Compare Flight PricesThe costs people forget
- Getting to the airport. OR Tambo is out of town; the bus leaves from the city. Add the Gautrain or an e-hailing ride to the flight price if you're not driving.
- Checked bags. The flight fares above are SAA fares that include a checked bag. On FlySafair and LIFT the cheapest fares are cabin bag only, and a checked bag costs extra. Use our baggage cost calculator.
- Food on the road. A 20-hour bus trip means at least two meals bought on the way.
- A night's accommodation. An overnight bus can replace a night in a hotel, which narrows the gap further in the bus's favour.
- A day of leave. If the bus costs you an extra day off work, that day usually outweighs the fare difference.
