About Flights from East London to Lanseria
There are no scheduled flights from East London to Lanseria. FlySafair opened the route in November 2025 and suspended it in April 2026, and no other airline operates it. Fly King Phalo Airport (ELS) to OR Tambo (JNB) instead — FlySafair, Airlink and CemAir all compete on that route with several departures a day. Search it below.
Best Time to Book & Travel
For the most competitive fares, booking 4–6 weeks in advance is highly recommended. Peak holidays push prices up; shoulder seasons are often better value.
Why land at Lanseria instead of OR Tambo?
Lanseria (HLA) is a compact single-terminal airport roughly 45 km north-west of the Johannesburg CBD, and for anyone heading to Sandton, Fourways, Midrand, Randburg, Roodepoort, the West Rand or Centurion it is the faster arrival. Bags come out quickly and you are off the airport in minutes rather than the long walk-and-queue at OR Tambo. The trade-off is frequency: FlySafair is the scheduled operator, so there are fewer daily arrivals and less price competition. If you are connecting onward to an international flight, you need OR Tambo instead — there is no scheduled service between the two airports.
Getting from Lanseria into the city
There is no Gautrain or scheduled bus service at Lanseria. Plan on e-hailing (Uber/Bolt), a pre-booked shuttle, car hire at the terminal, or someone collecting you. Typical drive times in normal traffic: Fourways ~20 minutes, Sandton ~30–35 minutes, Midrand ~35 minutes, Johannesburg CBD ~40 minutes, Pretoria ~50–60 minutes. Book shuttles ahead for late arrivals — the airport is quiet outside peak flight banks.
Route status: suspended since April 2026
FlySafair opened East London→Lanseria in November 2025 and suspended it in April 2026, citing limited demand. It was the only airline flying the route, so there is currently no scheduled service from King Phalo Airport into Lanseria at all. Several travel sites still list this route as bookable — it is not.
What to book instead: East London (ELS) to OR Tambo (JNB). FlySafair, Airlink and CemAir all operate it with multiple departures a day, and the competition keeps fares lower than a single-carrier route. Flight time is roughly 1 hour 30 minutes.
Getting north from OR Tambo: the Gautrain runs directly from the airport to Sandton and on to Pretoria, which is usually faster than driving the R21 in peak hour. If your final stop is Fourways, Midrand or the West Rand, e-hailing or car hire from OR Tambo is the practical option.

If the fare is the problem, not the route
Most people who abandon a East London to Lanseria booking do not change their mind about the trip — the price lands in the wrong week. These are the legitimate ways South Africans spread or reduce the cost, with the catches stated plainly rather than glossed over.
