About Flights from Lanseria to East London
There are no scheduled flights from Lanseria to East London. FlySafair suspended the route in April 2026 and no other airline has taken it on. Fly OR Tambo (JNB) to King Phalo Airport (ELS) instead — FlySafair, Airlink and CemAir all serve it. Search that route below.
Flying from Lanseria. Lanseria International Airport sits in northern Johannesburg — closer to Sandton, Fourways, Randburg and Pretoria than OR Tambo is. FlySafair operates the majority of Lanseria’s domestic routes. The terminal is smaller and faster than OR Tambo: shorter security queues, quicker boarding, and less ground-transfer time if you live north of the Johannesburg CBD. If your destination is not served from Lanseria, OR Tambo (45 km south-east) has the full domestic and international network.
Best Time to Book & Travel
The sweet spot for booking is around 4–6 weeks ahead. School holidays and December peaks price up; shoulder months often offer value.
Why fly from Lanseria instead of OR Tambo?
Lanseria (HLA) is a single-terminal airport about 45 km north-west of the Johannesburg CBD, and it is the faster option for anyone based in Sandton, Fourways, Midrand, Randburg, Roodepoort, the West Rand or Centurion. Bag drop and security are typically much quicker than at OR Tambo, and the walk from kerb to gate is short. The trade-off is choice: FlySafair is the scheduled operator here, so there are fewer daily departures and fewer carriers competing on price. Check both airports on your dates — OR Tambo sometimes undercuts Lanseria on base fare, and Lanseria often wins once you count the drive and the time saved.
Getting to Lanseria — and the parking question
There is no Gautrain and no scheduled public transport to Lanseria. Your options are driving, e-hailing (Uber/Bolt), a pre-booked shuttle, or a lift. Rough drive times in normal traffic: Sandton ~30–35 minutes, Midrand ~35 minutes, Fourways ~20 minutes, Pretoria ~50–60 minutes. Because there is no rail link, the parking-versus-e-hailing maths matters more here than at OR Tambo — for trips beyond about four days, e-hailing both ways is often cheaper than leaving a car parked.
Route status: suspended since April 2026
FlySafair launched Lanseria→East London in November 2025 and withdrew it in April 2026. The airline confirmed the route was paused because of limited demand and told affected passengers to rebook via OR Tambo. It was the only scheduled Lanseria–East London service, so with it gone there is no direct flight between the two airports on any carrier.
What to book instead: OR Tambo (JNB) to King Phalo Airport (ELS). FlySafair, Airlink and CemAir all compete on that route, which means more departures per day and better fares than the single daily Lanseria service ever carried. Flight time is roughly 1 hour 30 minutes. King Phalo is about 15 km from the East London CBD with car hire at the terminal.
If you live in the northern suburbs and picked Lanseria for the drive, the sum has changed: you now add the run to OR Tambo, but you can use the Gautrain from Sandton or Pretoria, and you gain several daily departure slots instead of one. For most travellers that is a net win on flexibility even though it costs the shorter drive.

How do I fly from Johannesburg to East London now?
Fly from OR Tambo (JNB) to King Phalo Airport (ELS). FlySafair, Airlink and CemAir all serve the OR Tambo route, so frequency and fare competition are far better than Lanseria ever offered.
Which routes does Lanseria still fly?
Lanseria (HLA) has four scheduled routes in 2026, all operated by FlySafair: Cape Town, Durban, George and Gqeberha. No other airline currently operates scheduled services from Lanseria.

If the fare is the problem, not the route
Most people who abandon a Lanseria to East London booking do not change their mind about the trip — the price lands in the wrong week. These are the legitimate ways South Africans spread or reduce the cost, with the catches stated plainly rather than glossed over.
